IMD Issues Red Alert for 3 Kerala Districts, Orange Alert for 11 on May 30

Holiday declared for educational institutions in Kannur, Ernakulam, Kasargod, Kottayam, Thrissur, Idukki and Wayanad districts on Friday

Thiruvananthapuram: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Kasargod, Kannur and Idukki on Friday because of the extremely heavy rainfall predicted for these districts in the next 48 hours.

The red alert indicates extremely heavy rainfall above 204.5 mm.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for the remaining districts: Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. Orange alert indicates heavy to very heavy rainfall - 64 mm to 204 mm.

A holiday has been declared for educational institutions in Kannur, Ernakulam, Kasargod, Kottayam, Thrissur, Idukki and Wayanad districts on Friday in the wake of the red and orange alert issued following heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The IMD has also sounded an alert about possible thunderstorms accompanied by lightning at one or two places over Kerala and Lakshadweep until May 31. Besides, the department has also sounded an alert about occasional strong surface winds, with speeds reaching 50-60 kmph, in some parts of the state.

The fishermen have been cautioned about the high waves ranging from 3.5 to 3.7 meters along coastal areas of Ernakulam, Alappuzha, Kollam, Thrissur and Thiruvananthapuram.

Various parts of Kerala continued to receive heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours, resulting in widespread damage. Over 62 houses were damaged in the Idukki district, including six facing destruction.

A woman identified as Elizabeth, 55, who slipped and died while running for safety following the uprooting of a tree in Elavanam Estate.

Cheruvanchery in Kannur recorded the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours, getting 15 cm of rain. Peerumedu in Idukki received 13 cm while Vythiri in Wayanad had 12 cm of rainfall.

In Kannur, the district collector declared a holiday for anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres and special classes on May 30.

In Ernakulam, all educational institutions, including professional institutions, will remain closed on Friday.
