THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Congress leader and Aroor MLA Shanimol Osman was elected Deputy Speaker of the Kerala Assembly on Tuesday.

She secured 99 votes, defeating LDF candidate Muhammad Muhsin, who managed to get only 34 votes. BJP’s three MLAs abstained from voting.

Shanimol is the fourth woman to be elected as Deputy Speaker in the Kerala Assembly. K. O. Aysha Bai was the first, serving from 1957 to 1959, followed by A. Nafeesath Beevi from 1960 to 1984, and Bhargavi Thankappan, who became Speaker in 1987.
