Thiruvananthapuram: Keralam Chief Minister V D Satheesan on Wednesday said that several important decisions, including on setting up a dedicated power plant in the state, were taken in a meeting with NTPC CMD Gurdeep Singh in Delhi a day ago.Satheesan, said the meeting with the chairman-cum-managing director (CMD) of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) Ltd was held to find solutions for the power crisis in Keralam, its current growing electricity needs and its future energy requirements.

The decisions include setting up a 2000 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Kayamkulam for which a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will be signed between Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), NTPC and NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), the CM said.
In addition to that two 80 80 MWh BESS projects each at Pothencode and Sreekantapuram will be commissioned by March 2027, he said.
The other decisions taken in the meeting were that NTPC Sinnar project in Maharashtra will provide up to 300 MW of power to Keralam at the rate of Rs 5.18 per unit, expediting further steps for implementing the 27 MW solar project by NTPC in Kayamkulam and requesting the NTPC to set up a dedicated power plant for the state, considering its long term energy requirement, Satheesan said.
He further said that the NTPC has also expressed its willingness to sign a Power Purchase Agreement to provide the required power from the Ramagundam power plant.
It was also decided in the meeting that NTPC's professional and technical expertise will be made available to KSEB to further strengthen its management, technical operations and modern power management systems, he said.
"Renewable energy, energy storage, additional power availability and long-term power security are crucial steps to further strengthen Keralam's future energy needs," the CM said.
