THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a tragic incident, a standard eight student was electrocuted after coming into contact with a low-hanging power line at Thevalakkara Boys' School in Kollam district on Thursday.

The victim was identified as Mithun, 13, son of daily wage worker, Valayapadam Anu. His mother, Suja works as a home nurse in Kuwait.

The incident happened around 8.30 am on campus. Mithun was playing with his friends when his slipper landed on the roof of a cycle shed. While climbing up to retrieve it, he accidentally touched an overhead power line and got electrocuted.

He was rushed to a nearby hospital but sadly couldn't be saved. After the tragedy, the school management and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) began blaming each other for the negligence.

The school management, under CPM control, stated that they had requested the KSEB to move the dangerously hanging electric line, but there was no response from the board officials.

Meanwhile, members of student organisations, including KSU, SFI and ABVP, protested against the school management and KSEB, demanding accountability for the lapse.

Education Minister V Sivankutty expressed deep sadness over the tragic incident and instructed the Director of Public Education to initiate a probe and submit a report at the earliest. He also directed senior officials to conduct safety checks in all schools in the district.

The KSEB has launched its separate investigation into the incident.
