Bengaluru police arrested two accused in a case involving alleged extortion of ₹42.97 lakh from a Udupi man he met through a matrimonial app.
A woman and her associate have been arrested for allegedly extorting nearly Rs 43 lakh from a Udupi man whom she met through a matrimonial app.
The accused, Nagarathna H (42), a native of Byndoor taluk, and Hemanth Karkera (41), from Karkala taluk, were arrested in Bengaluru on October 26 and remanded to judicial custody.
According to a complaint filed with Udupi Town police, an employee of a cooperative society in Udupi came into contact with Nagarathna through a matrimonial app in late 2023 -January 2024 while searching for a bride.
Nagarathna, who claimed to be working as a Kannada teacher, expressed interest in marrying him. However, Pradeep declined her proposal, saying he wanted to marry someone from his own community.
Despite the rejection, she allegedly continued contacting him and gradually began sharing her personal difficulties. She later allegedly threatened him into transferring money to her account and those of Hemanth, her relative Pramod and sister Renuka.
Between January 2024 and January 2026, Pradeep allegedly transferred Rs 42,97,350 to these accounts.
When he demanded repayment, Nagarathna allegedly threatened to file a false case claiming they had an illicit relationship. She also allegedly warned that she would visit his workplace, publicly accuse him of misappropriating cooperative society funds and humiliate him before colleagues and customers.
Police registered a case against four persons under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
A special team traced Nagarathna and Hemanth to Bengaluru and arrested them. Both were produced before a court, which remanded them to judicial custody.
