Udupi: Two youths died and two others injured after a tourist boat capsized near the Hangarkatta shipbuilding area on Monday afternoon.
Police said that the boat, operated by the Waveriders company, had departed from Malpe Delta Beach Point and capsized around noon at the spot where the river meets the sea. There were 14 passengers on board at the time of the incident.
Local fishermen and other boat operators rushed to the spot and shifted all the 14 passengers to the shore in other boats.
Four of the rescued passengers were in critical condition and were taken to hospital. Two of them later succumbed to injuries. The deceased have been identified as Shankarappa (22) and Sindhu (23). Shankarappa hails from Chikkamagaluru district and Sindhu from Chamarajanagar district. The injured include Dharmaraja (26), who is stated to be stable, and Deesha (26), who remains in a critical condition.
All the victims are part of a group that had come from a call center at Saraswathipuram in Mysuru district.
According to preliminary information, life jackets were provided to all passengers, though not all of them were wearing them. The details are being verified.
