Udupi: In a major initiative to keep young minds off the path of substance abuse, Udupi district has rolled out Anti-Drug Committees in schools and colleges—bringing together students, educators, and the police to fight the menace of narcotics.

The initiative with the support of the Udupi District Police, launched with the slogan “From intoxication to awakening – our resolve for a drug-free India,” was officially inaugurated on Wednesday.
Addressing the event Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar asked each college to form an Anti-Drug Committee consisting of the principal, two faculty members, and three students. A police officer from the jurisdictional station — either an Inspector or Sub-Inspector (Law and Order) — will serve as the nodal officer for the committee.
The committee will be expected to meet once a month and conduct at least one awareness programme, such as a walkathon or similar event, to engage students. Additionally, police representatives must be invited to each monthly meeting, and the nodal officer should attend once every three months.
Stating that Udupi district ranks third in Karnataka in terms of drug-related cases, the SP said that the students are less likely to fall prey to drugs when colleges and the police maintain close coordination.
The SP also assured that the identity of students or colleges who help uncover drug networks will be kept strictly confidential.
