Udupi: In a tragic incident at Tekkatte village in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on Thursday morning, a man and his son drowned after jumping into a well—first the father, allegedly in a suicide bid, and then the son in a desperate attempt to save him. The man's wife too jumped in to rescue both, but was the only one to survive.

The deceased have been identified as Madhava (60) and his son Prasad (23). The survivor, Tara (55), is Madhava’s wife and Prasad’s mother.
According to the police, Madhava, distressed over mounting financial burdens from loans taken through local self-help groups, was struggling emotionally in recent days. On Thursday morning around 6 am he reportedly jumped into the well situated in front of their house.
Prasad, witnessing the incident, instinctively jumped in to save his father. Seeing both of them struggling, Tara too leapt into the water in a desperate attempt to rescue her husband and son. However, Madhava and Prasad were unable to stay afloat and drowned. Tara, who managed to hold onto a pipe inside the well, was rescued by neighbours who rushed to the scene upon hearing her cries for help.
The family was residing in Tekkatte, with Madhava and Prasad employed at a petrol bunk near Basrur. Madhava had reportedly been deeply worried about repaying multiple loans taken from different co-operative societies.
A case has been registered at Kota Police Station. Further investigation is underway.
