Two Children Among Five Dead in Building Fire In Bengaluru

BENGALURU: 5 persons including a mother and her two children died reportedly owing to suffocation after accidental fire accompanied by thick smoke engulfed their building in Nagarathpet of Bengaluru city in the wee hours of Saturday. Personnel of Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services, Bengaluru doused the fire and recovered the bodies later.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established by officials concerned. Police and Forensic Science experts were at the accident site. However, it is suspected the fire started owing to a short circuit in the building and spread to other parts. Soon, thick smoke engulfed the building leading to the deaths.
The identities of the dead were established by the police which include Madan (38), Suresh (28), Sangeeta (33), Nitin (8) and Vihan (5). The fire was noticed at around 3.15 am.
A fire officer engaged in fire fighting told Deccan Chronicle the dead bodies have been recovered and the operation lasted for about two-hours to retrieve the bodies from the fire affected building and stated “The actual cause of the deaths is owing to suffocation from smoke caused by fire.”
Fire and Emergency Services personnel recovered the body of Madan from the ground floor of the building, Suresh’s body was recovered from the first floor and the bodies of Sangeeta, Nitin and Vihan were retrieved from the third floor of the same building. “It appears the dead belong to the same family,” the fire officer said.
The fire was noticed at around 3.15 am and personnel of Karnataka State Fire and Emergency Services were informed. The fire and emergency services personnel soon reached the spot and began dousing the fire. As many as 75 personnel and officers were engaged in firefighting which lasted for about three-and-half hours.
Bengaluru Commissioner of Police Seemanth Kumar Singh told reporters police and fire and emergency services personnel had difficulty in reaching the third floor of the building since the floor was locked from inside.
He attributed the fire to “short circuit” which is yet to be ascertained and stated some escaped the fire after noticing some noise in the building.
