Transformers Explode In Bengaluru At Two Places, 5 Injured

BENGALURU: A couple of persons sustained injuries in separate incidents of transformers attached to Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) exploded in Bengaluru city on Tuesday and the explosions have occurred within a span of 24-hours raising concerns over the maintenance and safety of electrical infrastructure. Technical investigations are underway to ascertain the cause while experts suspected it could be owing to overloading, lack of maintenance, equipment ageing among others.
In one of the incidents caught on a car dash cam of a traveler on the road, two persons were seen walking engaged in a chat while a girl was little behind them, when a transformer installed around about the head height of the person exploded leaving one of them injured while the other managed to escape.
Another too showed evasive action after the transformer exploded and the injured rolled on the ground before he was attended by fellow pedestrians and locals. This incident of a transformer explosion is said to have occurred at around 9.50 am near Amazon office near Bagalur Cross in northeast part of Bengaluru city under Yelahanka Old Town police station. Police identified as Mohammad Afroz and undergoing treatment for his injuries. He is said to be safe.
The other explosion occurred at Benniganahalli under Ramamurthy Nagar police station also on Tuesday in between 12.30 pm and 1 pm near a go down. The explosion of the transformer led to thick smoke in the area and left Narayan (50), a resident of Motappanapalya in Indiranagar, Azeem Pasha of T.C. Palya, Chetan (23) a resident of Thanisandra and Lakshmi (22). The injured four were shifted to a nearby hospital.
