BENGALURU: Some parents at Alakere village in Mandya objected to the decision of the officials of Public Instructions to serve eggs to their children as part of mid-day meals scheme citing serving of eggs to their children hurt their religious sentiments since consumption of non-vegetarian foods in the vicinity of Veerabhadra Swamy is strictly prohibited.

The parents have warned the school authorities to stop sending their children to school if egg supply is not withdrawn by the officials. The school has attendance of 120 students and nearly 80 students have said no to eggs to them.

The villagers of Alakere said since times immemorial consumption of non-vegetarian foods in the vicinity of Veerabhadra Swamy Temple has been a taboo and the school is in close proximity to the Temple. The villagers hold Veerabhadra Swamy in high reverence and eating eggs will spoil the sanctity of the Temple.

However, another section of the villagers favour serving eggs considering it to be part of nutrition required for growing children. Officials of Public Instructions are chalking out a formula on egg serving at Alakere. DDPI Mandya was not available for comment.
