One fisherman died and another went missing when a boat capsized off the coast of Murudeshwar in Uttara Kannada district on Thursday morning, officials said. The incident occurred when four fishermen had set out to sea from Murudeshwar aboard a gillnet boat owned by Janardhan A Harikanth. The vessel reportedly overturned due to strong waves.

One of the fishermen, Madhav Harikanth (45), drowned and was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Search operations are ongoing for Venkatesh Annappa Harikanth (26), who remains missing. Two other fishermen--Anand Annappa Harikanth and an unidentified crew member--managed to swim ashore and escaped unhurt. Murudeshwar Police, Coastal Security Police, local fishermen and residents have launched a search operation for the missing man, authorities said.
