Kalaburagi: A demand to give Madhwacharya Jayanti an official place in Karnataka’s public calendar reached Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Thursday, with representatives of three organisations seeking a state-sponsored celebration of the 13th-century philosopher’s life and teachings.

Representatives of the Jilla Brahmana Sangha, Vishwa Madhwa Maha Parishat and Satyatma Sena met Shivakumar in Kalaburagi and submitted a memorandum seeking an annual government programme to mark the Jayanti, which falls on Vijayadashami.

The representatives said Madhwacharya, the Acharya from Karnataka, had made an immense contribution to Sanatana Dharma, philosophy and spirituality, besides Karnataka’s religious and cultural traditions.

His Dvaita philosophy had a significant influence on religious and philosophical thought not only in Karnataka but across the country.

Against this backdrop, the representatives urged the Chief Minister to officially celebrate the birth anniversary of Jagadguru Sri Madhwacharya every year on Vijayadashami at the state level under the auspices of the Karnataka government.

They urged the government to organise seminars, lectures and cultural programmes on Madhwacharya’s life, philosophy and contributions as part of the Jayanti celebrations. They also sought directions to the concerned department to take steps to familiarise younger generations with his legacy.

District in-charge Minister Priyank Kharge, Minister Dr Sharan Prakash Patil and MLA Allamprabhu Patil were present.

Uttaradi Math representative Ramacharya Ghanti, Sanskrit scholar Navali Gurumadhwacharya, Brahmin community president Pandurang Deshmukh, and others were present.
