Gadag: Age is just a number for an elderly couple from Mundawada village in Mundargi taluk, who continue to lead a life of self-reliance by actively participating as daily wage workers in the MGNREGA scheme. Shankarapppa Koobihal (82) and his wife Shankaramma Koobihal (74) have been working together for the past decade in community trenching, desilting of nalas and tanks, and other labour-intensive projects under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.
The couple, residents of the Bidarahalli Gram Panchayat jurisdiction, participate enthusiastically in the summer employment projects offered under MGNREGA, supplementing the income they earn from their two-acre dryland farm and by working on others' fields. Their dedication and energy have become an inspiration to the younger generation.
Despite their age, they remain healthy and active, attributing their strength to simple daily meals of jowar rotti and regular hard work. They have two daughters who are both married, and the couple handles all work jointly with unwavering enthusiasm.
“Labour is the mother of all earnings. During the summer, we always take part in MGNREGA work without fail. This program has been very beneficial for our livelihood. It must be over ten years now since we have been working under this scheme. When there is no MGNREGA work, we help on others’ farms,” Shankarapppa and Shankaramma Koobihal expressed their experience.
They benefit from the MGNREGA provision which allows senior citizens to earn full wages for half-day work.
"In Mundargi taluk, many individuals are leading self-reliant lives through work under the MGNREGA scheme. Along with preventing soil erosion, senior citizens participating in such initiatives have become role models for others," said Vishwanath Hosamani, Executive Officer, Taluk Panchayat, Mundargi.
Trenches dug under the MGNREGA have become vital for farmers, storing rainwater, improving groundwater levels, and boosting soil fertility. These rural job works not only generate local employment but also enhance agricultural productivity.
Each trench, measuring 10x5x2 feet, can hold up to 2,700 litres of water. They reduce erosion and increase water percolation, directly helping crop yield. Farmers can choose individual works like horticulture or join community projects. With equal pay for men and women, the scheme also offers up to Rs 18,500 for 50 days of summer work—supporting household needs and farming preparations.
