Udupi: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman was on Saturday honoured with the Bharata Lakshmi Award by Paryaya Shri Puttige Shri Krishna Math during the Shri Krishna Janmashtami Mandalotsava.

The award was presented by Paryaya Peetadhipathi Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji in the presence of junior seer Sri Sushreendra Teertha Swamiji and Sri Vishwapriya Teertha of Adamaru Math, recognising her exemplary stewardship of India’s economy and commitment to public service.

In its citation, the Math lauded Sitharaman for upholding the scriptural ideal of wisdom in earning and spending, and for strengthening the nation’s treasury—one of the seven pillars of governance—through “effort, intelligence, and capability.” Her integrity was praised, with the citation noting she lived up to her name—Nirmala—by safeguarding financial discipline. Drawing a spiritual parallel, it compared her rise to the re-emergence of Goddess Lakshmi during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthana): “When Narendra, like Mahendra, churned the Ksheera Sagara of India, there emerged Lakshmi in the form of Nirmala.”

Visibly moved, Sitharaman grew emotional several times while addressing devotees at Udupi Sri Krishna Math. “This is a holy place for me. I have very special moments when I think about this place. Krishna’s blessings are immensely on me, and the prayers of Gurus have helped me,” she said.

She prayed for Lord Krishna’s blessings upon India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during challenging times, adding, “When challenges come, the greatest support is the prayers of Gurus and the grace of Lord Krishna, which will lead and take us forward.” Urging unity and devotion, she said, “All of us Indians should be united and serve the country. Serving human beings is serving God.”

Earlier in the day, Sitharaman inaugurated the new Kashta Yali (wooden colonnade) at the Math. Built in the region’s traditional coastal architectural style at a cost of around ₹1 crore, the redesigned roofline enhances the temple’s spiritual and aesthetic appeal.
