Koppal: Koppal district in-charge Minister Shivaraj S Tangadagi said the installation of new crest gates at the Tungabhadra reservoir—considered the lifeline of lakhs of farmers in Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh—is progressing as planned and will be completed within the stipulated time to ensure maximum benefit to farmers.

He was speaking to the media on Sunday after inspecting the ongoing works at the Tungabhadra dam.

The minister said a time-bound target has been set to complete the installation of all 33 new crest gates by June. However, the company that secured the tender has assured that the work will be completed ahead of schedule, by May.

A total tender value of Rs 54 crore has been approved for replacing all 33 crest gates. Of this, Andhra Pradesh has already contributed Rs 20 crore, while Karnataka has released Rs 10 crore to the Tungabhadra Board. Telangana is expected to release its share soon.

Tangadagi said the project is progressing steadily, with the installation of gate number 18 completed on Sunday. “Our government is extending all necessary support. Officials from the State government and the Tungabhadra Board are working diligently to ensure timely completion,” he said.

Initially, the company had planned to install six gates per month but has now assured that eight gates will be installed every month.

He added that fabrication of 15 gates has already been completed, with only installation remaining. Fabrication of eight more gates is currently underway. Of the four gates each being fabricated in Hosapete and Gadag districts, two gates at each location are expected to be completed within the next two days.

Tungabhadra Board Secretary ORK Reddy said dismantling of old gates and erection of new ones are being carried out simultaneously. Installation of gates number 18 and 20 has been completed, while work on gate number 27 will begin within the next three days. Work on gate number 4 has also started, after which four gates will be installed consecutively.

He added that around 40 workers are engaged in the project and all 33 new crest gates are expected to be installed by the second week of May.
