Mangaluru: A man who was among those booked for allegedly troubling a couple at a beach in Surathkal police station limits died by suicide on Tuesday.

The deceased has been identified as Somanath. Police had registered a case against him and others following a complaint that they had allegedly troubled a couple who visited the beach on Monday.

As the offences attracted a punishment of less than three years, police had served Somanath a notice in connection with the investigation. He subsequently died by suicide by hanging on Tuesday morning. A suicide note was also reportedly found.

In the evening, a group gathered outside Surathkal police station with his body, demanding action against the woman who had lodged the complaint and her boyfriend. MLA Bharath Shetty also joined the protest.

The protesters alleged that the couple was responsible for Somanath's death and demanded that an FIR be registered against them.

Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy said the protesters had been informed that they could submit a complaint.

"We told them that they could submit a complaint and that a case would be registered and investigated if they want," the Commissioner said.

The protesters then took the body and left the spot. Traffic, which had been affected during the protest, was subsequently cleared.
