Udupi: Kollur police have arrested a Group D employee of a government hospital in connection with the alleged theft of gold ornaments worn by a woman who died in a road accident in Kollur earlier this month.

The case was registered based on a complaint filed by Srikumar alleging that unidentified persons had stolen the gold ornaments worn by one of the deceased women at the accident spot. A case was registered at Kollur police station under Section 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The accident occurred on May 17 at Dali in Kollur village, in which two women pilgrims from Kerala lost their lives. Kollur police had initially registered a case of accidental death in connection with the road mishap.

Acting on the directions of Deputy Superintendent of Police HD Kulkarni and Byndoor Circle Inspector Shivakumar, the Kollur police launched an investigation using CCTV footage, photographs taken by the public at the scene, and technical evidence.

Within 24 hours, police traced and arrested the accused, identified as Hemanth (40), a resident of Kalyanigudde in Kollur village.

According to police, the accused works as a Group D employee at the government hospital in Kundapur and allegedly stole the gold ornaments when the bodies were brought to the hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police recovered stolen ornaments worth about Rs 2.07 lakh from his possession, including a ring weighing 3.910 grams, a bangle weighing 3.450 grams, and a chain weighing 7.160 grams.

The accused was produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
