BENGALURU: Bengaluru is bracing up for its first elections to 5 newly created City Corporations after the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) which came into existence in September previous year replaced Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). Previous elections to BBMP were held in 2015 and its term ended in 2020. Since then BBMP functioned without elected representatives before GBA took its birth.
The Supreme Court order on Monday paved the way for holding elections to 5 City Corporations of GBA and the Apex Court in its order stated “The election to GBA in all circumstances shall be over by June 30.”
“We are ready for polls,” said Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Tuesday instructions have been given to the State Election Commission (SEC) to conduct elections to wards of Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) on Supreme Court’s order.
However, Shivakumar said the State Election Commission has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court over conducting elections and he added “It is up to them.” But, the State Government will give all orders to the Election Commission to conduct elections to Zilla Panchayat and Taluk Panchayat.
“Instructions have been given to the State Election Commission by the State Government,” he said and stated elections to wards of Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will be conducted as per the order of the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court on Monday asked the State Government to issue the final notification for the delimitation of wards under the newly formed 5 City Corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to conduct the elections to wards. The SC gave a final deadline of February 20, 2026 to issue final notification for the delimitation of wards.
As many as 369 wards have come into existence under GBA which include 112 wards in Bengaluru West City Corporation, 72 each in Bengaluru North and South City Corporations, 63 in Bengaluru Central City Corporation and 50 in Bengaluru East City Corporation.
