Dharwad: Dharwad district Additional Superintendent of Police Narayan V. Baramani, who recently made headlines after seeking voluntary retirement following a public rebuke by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has now been transferred as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) (Law and Order) of Belagavi.

The transfer, announced on July 17 as part of a reshuffle involving four SP (Civil) non-IPS officers, is widely seen as a conciliatory gesture by the government to retain Baramani in service.

Baramani had submitted his voluntary retirement request in June, citing emotional distress and loss of self-respect. The decision followed an incident at a Congress rally in Belagavi on April 28, where the CM allegedly summoned Baramani on stage and raised his hand in anger during a bandobast situation. The moment, which was widely televised, caused public embarrassment and reportedly left Baramani feeling isolated, with no outreach from senior officials.

The state government had not approved Baramani’s request for retirement. The latest posting is seen as a move to offer him a new role, restore confidence, and bring an end to the controversy.

Baramani had previously served as ACP in Belagavi, where he was known for his effective policing and had earned a positive reputation.

Speaking at a farewell ceremony hosted by the Dharwad police on Wednesday evening, Additional Superintendent of Police Narayan V. Baramani urged the officers to uphold the dignity and pride of the khaki uniform throughout their careers.

He said he had revered the police department like a mother for the past 33 years.

“Our duty must reflect the motto — punishment for the wicked and protection for the good. We must be fearless, law-abiding, and lead society by example,” he said.
