IndiGo’s MRO hub at Bengaluru to boost aviation jobs and make Karnataka Asia’s aviation leader
Bengaluru: IndiGo, India’s largest passenger airline, is all set to establish its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport on 31 acres with a capital investment of Rs 1,100 crore. Commenting on the development, Minister for Large and Medium Scale Industries M.B. Patil said, “With Air India, TASL, HAL, and now IndiGo establishing facilities in Karnataka, the state continues to emerge as a preferred destination for aviation innovation, manufacturing, and maintenance in Asia.”
The minister said the MRO facility will feature four hangars capable of servicing four wide-body or eight narrow-body aircraft, and one paint hangar that can accommodate one wide-body or two narrow-body aircraft. It will also support wide-body models such as the A350 series and will have the capability to service aircraft belonging to codeshare partners.
“This development marks a major step forward in strengthening India’s civil aviation ecosystem and positioning Bengaluru as a key global aviation hub,” Patil said, adding, “Bengaluru is now poised to become the MRO hub of Asia.”
Patil emphasized that the Government of Karnataka is deeply committed to advancing aerospace and aviation manufacturing in the state. IndiGo’s investment in a state-of-the-art MRO facility, he said, further strengthens the vision of making Karnataka the MRO capital of Asia.
The facility is expected to generate over 750 direct high-skill jobs across engineering, logistics, warehousing, and support services. It will also enhance Kempegowda International Airport’s capacity to handle an estimated 1,300 aircraft by 2031 and approximately 2,100 aircraft by 2038, the minister added.
In addition to boosting job opportunities, Patil noted that IndiGo’s MRO facility is likely to attract leading global Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier-1 suppliers as well.
