Kalaburagi: An 80-year-old woman undertrial prisoner lodged at Kalaburagi Central Prison was released following an order of the 4th Additional District and Sessions Court, Kalaburagi (Sedam Bench).

The woman, Chandramma, wife of Lachchamappa Jattanakeri, had been in judicial custody as undertrial prisoner No 15246. She was granted bail by the court on December 13, 2022 under Clause 3 of the Under Trial Review (UTR) Committee guidelines, which pertains to prisoners granted bail by the competent court but who have not been able to secure release due to non-fulfilment of surety conditions. As the case was placed before the UTR Committee, the Court ordered her release upon execution of a personal bond of Rs 50,000.

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Kalaburagi, after examining the case on humanitarian grounds, provided the necessary assistance to facilitate the release of the said undertrial woman prisoner.

Accordingly, Chandramma was formally released from Kalaburagi Central Prison on the night of December 24. As she has no family members or relatives to support her, prison authorities, led by the Chief Superintendent Dr Anitha R, arranged for her safe transfer to Nemmadi Senior Citizens Home run by Margadarshi Charitable Trust in Kalaburagi.

Officials said the decision was taken keeping in view her advanced age, health condition and lack of family support, with coordinated efforts from the judiciary, prison administration and legal services institutions to ensure her rehabilitation.
