Vijayapura: Bijapur City MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal has urged the state government and police to hold protest organisers accountable if any untoward incidents or damage to Hindu properties occur during a proposed agitation in Vijayapura on April 28.

In a letter addressed to the Home Minister, DG-IGP, IGP (North Range – Belagavi), and the Superintendent of Police, Yatnal expressed concerns over a protest being planned by some minority community leaders against him and the Waqf Amendment Act. He warned that if the protest leads to unrest or communal tension, the organisers must be held legally responsible.
“If there is any damage to Hindu lives or property during this protest, strict legal action must be taken against those who issued the call for the agitation,” Yatnal stated in the letter.
Claiming that there is a possibility of violence being instigated by miscreants, he said protest leaders might later try to evade accountability by blaming outsiders. To prevent this, Yatnal insisted that organisers be made to submit a written undertaking accepting full responsibility for maintaining peace and order during the event.
He also requested the police to ensure tight surveillance, including video recording of the entire protest, and to monitor the key participants.
