Mangaluru: A migrant labourer from Jharkhand was allegedly assaulted by a group of four men in Mangaluru after they accused him of being a Bangladeshi national and demanded proof of his identity, police said on Monday.

The victim, identified as Diljan Ansari, has been working in Mangaluru as a migrant labourer for the past 10–15 years, staying in the city for four to six months each year for work. According to the police, he was assaulted by four men who alleged that he was a Bangladeshi and demanded that he show all kinds of proofs. They also made some unwanted and unnecessary comments.

When Ansari maintained that he was an Indian citizen and not a Bangladeshi, the men allegedly assaulted him using his own work implements, striking him on the head and causing heavy bleeding, police said. A local woman intervened and rescued him from the attack.

Fearing further trouble, Ansari did not immediately approach the police and returned home without lodging a complaint. The incident later came to the notice of the police after local leaders alerted them.

Police said they verified the facts and confirmed that Ansari is an Indian citizen who had come to Mangaluru for work. A case under 126(2), 109, 352, 351(3),353, 118(1) r/w 3(5) of BNS is registered against the accused.

The accused have been identified as Sagar, Danush, Lalu alias Rathish, and Mohan, all residents of Kulur. The incident occurred within the limits of Kavoor police station.
