“Co-host would help showcase Karnataka’s sporting capabilities to audiences across the country and internationally,” he said at a felicitation programme organised by the Karnataka State Basketball Association at the Kanteerava Olympic Bhavan in Kanteerava Stadium to honour junior and youth basketball teams that have achieved success in national championships.

“A plan has been prepared to establish a Sports’ City on about 60 acres near Devanahalli and a comprehensive blueprint has been prepared to facilitate multiple sports within an integrated sports infrastructure,” he said and stated “The State Government is working towards making Karnataka one of the country’s leading sporting States in days to come.”

Parameshwara said the State’s strength in sports is well reflected in swimming, where Karnataka has been national champions for 33 years and assured that special encouragement will be provided to sports in which the State’s athletes excel.

“A system of direct recruitment to the posts of medal-winners sportspersons has also been introduced,” Parameshwara said and pointed to a 2 percent reservation that has been provided in various recruitments in the State Police Department to create employment opportunities for sports persons has now been increased to 3 percent. With the rise in reservation, several sports persons have been recruited to the posts of Police Sub-Inspector and constable.

The State Government is developing the necessary infrastructure to promote sports in the State and arrangements have also been made to send (deserving) athletes/sports persons abroad for advanced training, said the deputy Chief minister.
