UDUPI: Charges have been framed by the court against 11 Maoist accused produced before it, in connection with 39 cases registered against them, according to Udupi police.

Providing details of the accused produced before the courts, officials said M Vanajakshi alias Jyothi alias Kalpana (58) of Chikkamagaluru district is lodged in Bengaluru Central Prison and faces charges in six cases. B G Krishnamurthy alias Vijay alias Bhagat (46) is lodged in the Viyyur High Security Prison, Thrissur, Kerala, and is charged in seven cases.
Savithri JL alias Usha (33) is lodged in the Women’s Prison at Thrissur and is charged in two cases, while Neelaguli Padmanabha of Chikkamagaluru district, charged in two cases, is presently out on bail.
Among others, Tombattu Lakshmi alias Lakshmi Poojari (39) of Kundapur taluk has been granted bail and faces charges in three cases. Latha alias Mundagaru Latha (45) is lodged in Bengaluru Central Prison and is charged in 12 cases.
Mahesh alias Madhav alias John (49) is lodged in the Viyyur High Security Prison, Thrissur, and faces charges in eight cases. Kanyakumari alias Suvarna is lodged in Bengaluru Central Prison and is charged in 10 cases.
A S Suresh alias Mahesh alias Tungappa (50) is lodged in Kannur Central Prison, Kerala, and faces charges in 23 cases. Sundari alias Geetha is lodged in Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, Bengaluru, and faces charges in nine cases.
Another accused, Prabha alias Hosagadde Prabha, is presently staying at an old-age home in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, and charged in six cases.
According to a press statement a total of 68 Naxal-related cases have been registered in the district so far, of which 28 cases have been disposed of.
Maoist activity was reported in the Western Ghats region of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts between 2000 and 2015. However, the activities gradually declined over the years and have now reduced to zero.
