Chikkaballapura: A man was arrested in a suspected case of female infanticide in Chikkaballapura district, police said. The man allegedly killed his 13-day-old daughter by throwing her into a water sump after being upset over the birth of a second girl child, they said.
The accused, identified as Imran, a resident of Shanthinagar, was arrested following questioning, they said, adding that a case has been registered based on a complaint lodged by his wife Muskan.
According to police, Muskan had given birth to a baby girl 13 days ago. The couple already has a four-year-old daughter.
Police said that Imran was allegedly unhappy over the birth of another girl child. On Wednesday night, while other family members were asleep, he allegedly threw the infant into the water sump at their residence.
The family launched a search after Muskan noticed that the baby was missing. Imran was among those searching and later claimed to have found the infant in the sump, police said.
The baby was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead, they said.
After receiving information from the district hospital, police questioned the family members, who claimed it to be a case of accidental drowning.
During the investigation, Imran confessed to the crime, following which he was arrested, police said. Further investigation is underway.
