Bengaluru: Incidents of accidents where children travelling in private being injured have brought the issue of children’s safety into focus again. In a recent case, the rear door of a moving school van unexpectedly opened up, and four children fell onto the road.
The incident reportedly occurred in Gayatri Layout in K R Puram when the Omni van, which was transporting schoolchildren back home. It is not clear what caused the rear door to open suddenly. Reports state that the door opened after it hit a pothole, and others indicate that the door might not have been closed properly.
The van driver stopped the vehicle, and the children seated in front immediately rushed to help the girls. As there was less traffic at the time of the incident, and the lane was also narrow, a major accident was averted. The injured children suffered only minor injuries. Another issue that came to the fore was the violation of seating capacity norms in small vans, where children are transported beyond the permissible limit, and many of them are made to sit in the rear part of the van meant for carrying luggage.
