Udupi: The alertness of a ticket examiner and the swift response of Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel helped rescue five minor boys who had run away from their homes and were found travelling without tickets on the Matsyagandha Express.
Sharing the details on Thursday, officials said that the incident occurred on Wednesday when ticket examiner Sabitha Shetty was checking tickets on the Matsyagandha Express when the train was between Barkur and Udupi. During the inspection, she noticed five boys travelling without tickets and found their behaviour suspicious.
She immediately alerted the RPF Control and the RPF Post at Udupi.
When the train reached Udupi Railway Station, RPF constable Muralidharan boarded the general coach and safely escorted the children to the RPF Post for counselling and inquiry.
During counselling, the boys revealed that they had left their homes because of family-related issues. The children were provided refreshments before being handed over to the Child Help Desk in Udupi for safe custody, counselling and efforts to reunite them with their families.
The children were from Bengaluru. According to officials, they had been to Mumbai. There they boarded the Matsyagandha Express (Mumbai-Mangaluru).
Further action will be taken as per the prescribed legal procedure.
“The prompt alertness and coordinated efforts of TTE Sabitha Shetty and CT Muralidharan resulted in the safe rescue of five minor children, preventing them from possible exploitation, trafficking, or other dangers,” officials said.
