TIRUPATI: Opposition YSRC has protested against what is said “restrictions being opposed” ahead of party president and former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy’s visit to the Nellore Central Jail on Thursday to meet remanded party leader and former minister Kakani Govardhan Reddy.

Addressing media here on Tuesday, senior party leader and former TTD chairman Bhumana Karunakar Reddy charged that YSRC leaders are being threatened with legal action and restrictions are being imposed on people assembling.

“Is this a democracy or a dictatorship," he asked, underlining that Jagan Mohan Reddy is a leader of the masses and people come voluntarily to see him.

Former MP Gorantla Madhav advised police to work as per the rule book and not according to the whims of the political leadership. He alleged that police are threatening to open rowdy sheets against YSRC leaders who attend the meeting on occasion of Jagan’s visit.

Madhav demanded that unlike in Guntur during an earlier visit of Jagan Mohan Reddy, police must provide proper protection to the opposition leader when he meets party leaders Govardhan Reddy and N Prasanna Kumar Reddy.

Bhumana Karunakar Reddy criticised NDA government’s P4 (People-Public-Private-Partnership for Poor) initiative, terming it a shift from governance to philanthropy. “If Chandrababu Naidu is serious about helping the poor, he can use his wealth to sponsor the 20 lakh families identified under P4, instead of pressuring the administration and setting arbitrary targets for adoption of families,” he remarked.

On Monday, YSRC MP Maddila Gurumoorthy, raised in Lok Sabha the arrest of YSRC Lok Sabha floor leader and P.V. Midhun Reddy, preventing the latter from attending. The MP underlined that the issue is not an isolated one, but part of a growing pattern of suppressing any form of opposition in Andhra Pradesh. “Such actions,” the MP said, “are deeply concerning and go against the core values of justice, fairness and democratic governance.”

Gurumoorthy urged Parliament to take a serious note of these developments and ensure that political power is not allowed to override rule of law.
