YSRC Moves SC Seeking Extension Of Deadline to File Nominations In ULB Polls
YSRC general secretary Lella Appireddy filed a special leave petition in the apex court: Reports
VIJAYAWADA: The YSR Congress has moved the Supreme Court seeking extension of the deadline for filing of nominations and designation of additional nomination centres, as “mass violence” prevented its candidates from filing their papers for the ULB polls in Andhra Pradesh.
YSRC general secretary Lella Appireddy filed a special leave petition in the apex court challenging the AP high court order issued on October 18 refusing to extend the nomination period by a day.
The petitioner alleged that several YSRC candidates were assaulted, threatened and physically prevented from reaching the nomination centres during the nomination period from October 16 to 18. He quoted incidents of violence in Punganur, Rayachoti, Kadapa, Tirupati.
The YSRC alleged that the nomination papers of a candidate in Kadapa were snatched and torn while nine contestants in Tirupati municipal elections were prevented from entering the offices of the concerned returning officers.
The petitioner also mentioned about the alleged attack on a convoy of YSRC MP PV Mithun Reddy while he was accompanying candidates to file their nominations.
The principal opposition argued that the courts intervene to protect the electoral process when candidates were prevented from contesting the elections
It also sought a direction that the candidates who were unable to file nominations due to alleged obstruction should be allowed to submit their papers during the extended period.
The YSRC also sought a stay on the declaration of candidates as ‘elected unopposed’ in the affected wards, pending further orders from the apex court.
