YSRC Alleges Police Misuse, Assault on MPTCs During Vinjamur MPP Byelection
The party accused local police of dereliction of duty and partisan conduct, amounting to serious violations of Election Commission orders.
Nellore: The YSRC has alleged grave misuse of police machinery, illegal detention and assault on elected Mandal Praja Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) members during the MPP byelection at Vinjamur mandal in SPSR Nellore district on Monday.
In a representation to the DGP, the YSRC stated that despite clear instructions issued by the AP State Election Commission to ensure a free and fair poll, elected MPTCs belonging to the party were obstructed from attending the special meeting to elect the MPP.
Vehicles of MPTCs were allegedly stopped, members were illegally restrained and assaulted, and a woman MPTC, Ratnamma, reportedly sustained bleeding injuries. The YSRC also alleged that one MPTC was abducted and another illegally detained by police.
The YSRC pointed out that it had a clear majority in the mandal with eight elected MPTCs, but by preventing them from participating, the election process was allegedly manipulated and an independent candidate was declared MPP.
The party accused local police of dereliction of duty and partisan conduct, amounting to serious violations of Election Commission orders.
The party demanded immediate registration of criminal cases, an independent probe by a senior officer, strict action against erring police personnel, protection to affected MPTCs and steps to restore public confidence in the neutrality of the police.
The YSRC warned that failure to act would force it to approach the High Court and statutory authorities.
