World Red Cross Day, Thalassemia Day Observed at IRCS Nellore

TIRUPATI: The Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Nellore district branch, observed World Red Cross Day and World Thalassemia Day at the Red Cross office in Nellore on Friday.

Joint-collector and Red Cross Nellore vice-president Mogili Venkateswarlu attended the programme as chief guest and said the Red Cross has emerged as a symbol of humanitarian service across the world.

Addressing the gathering organised under the theme “Humanitarian Services”, he appreciated the services being rendered by the organisation during disasters, accidents and health emergencies.

He said children suffering from thalassemia require blood every month and noted that voluntary blood donors play a key role in saving their lives. He appealed to youth to participate in blood donation programmes and stressed the need to strengthen the spirit of service in society.

Red Cross district chairman V. Vijaya Kumar Reddy said society should support children with thalassemia in health, education and nutrition-related needs.

He appreciated voluntary blood donors for ensuring regular blood supply and said families of thalassemia patients also require emotional and moral support.

Managing committee members, cancer hospital coordinator Yalamuri Rangaiah Naidu and thalassemia executive member Dr Sita also addressed the gathering.

Mastanayya, thalassemia service executive member Shaik Parveen, former Red Cross chairman Dr A.V. Subrahmanyam, staff members and others were present.
