Woman attacked with acid, knife in Annamayya district

Police keep vigil over the accused, who consumed pesticide after the attack.

Tirupati:A man attacked a 23-year-old woman with acid and knife at her home in Pyarampalle village in Gurramkonda mandal of Annamayya district on Friday. Her parents had been away at the time.

According to police, the victim runs a beauty parlour in Madanapalle. She got engaged to a relative on January 7 and her wedding has been scheduled on April 29.

Accused Ganesh (24) from Ammancheruvu Metta is a classmate of the victim. He had been harassing her in the name of love. On Friday morning, he visited her home after her parents had left. Their chatting turned into a heated argument.

Ganesh then stabled her multiple times. He went on to collect the acid cleaner bottle from the bathroom and threw acid on her. Hearing her screams, neighbours rushed in. But Ganesh fled before they could intervene. Her family members living nearby took her to the Government Hospital in Madanapalle in a 108 ambulance.

According to doctors, the woman has suffered seven stab wounds and acid burns. Her parents later shifted her to a hospital in Bengaluru for advanced medical care.

Ganesh, after escaping, allegedly consumed pesticide. He has been admitted to a hospital where police have deployed tight security to prevent him from escaping.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has condemned the attack and directed officials to take stringent action against the accused. He assured that the government will provide full support to ensure best of medical treatment to the woman as well as support to her family.

Home minister Vangalapudi Anitha expressed strong anger over the incident. She instructed police not to spare the perpetrator. Minister Nara Lokesh expressed deep concern, promising top medical assistance to the victim.

Gurramkonda police have registered a case and are investigating.

Meanwhile, the YSR Congress party accused the Telugu Desam-led NDA government of shielding the accused due to his alleged political connections with TD leaders. Making the allegation in a post on X, the opposition party demanded strict action against the accused.
