Vijayawada: Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, in a message on the National Handloom Day, urged youths to wear handloom clothes at least once a week, to support this financially ailing sector.

In a social media post, he said, “We will undertake promotional programmes to increase the consumption of handlooms. If the youth wear handlooms once a week, employment opportunities for those dependent on that sector will improve.”

He said, “Handloom has been a pillar of our country's culture, freedom movement concepts and the creativity of our artists. On the occasion of National Handloom Day, my heartfelt greetings to handloom artisans.”

“In the cabinet meeting this week, we have taken decisions to help the handloom sector. Free electricity will be provided to 200 units for weaving looms and 500 units for spinning (power) looms. It has been decided to implement a 5 per cent subsidy on GST on purchases made by societies and to set up a thrift fund,” he said.
