Vizianagaram native led the construction of Pamban bridge
From rural Andhra Pradesh, Chakradhar played a pivotal role in the Rs 535 crore Pamban Bridge project.
Visakhapatnam: A 28-year-old talented engineer from Andhra Pradesh Nadupur Venkata Chakradhar from Bhupalapuram in Gurla mandal of Vizianagaram district has successfully led the construction of the prestigious Pamban Bridge, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated on Sunday in Tamil Nadu’s Ramanathapuram district.
The Rs 535 crore bridge is India’s first vertical lift railway project.
“Since childhood, I’ve been fascinated by bridges,” said Chakradhar, born to teacher parents Sridevi and Paidiraju. His journey from a rural village to commanding one of India’s most significant infrastructure projects is a testament of rural talent and perseverance.
After completing his B. Tech in civil engineering, Chakradhar had been preparing for the Indian Engineering Services when he secured a position with Indian Railways through the Railway Recruitment Board.
His exceptional skills quickly earned him a promotion to senior engineer, positioning him perfectly when the government decided to replace the ageing Pamban Bridge connecting Rameswaram island to mainland India.
As the chief of the entire construction process, Chakradhar coordinated with hundreds of experts and workers, implementing advanced technology, while ensuring that most equipment is sourced domestically.
Despite incorporating Spanish technology for the vertical lift mechanism, the project is a strong example of indigenous capabilities.
“For an entire year, I couldn’t visit my hometown or attend any family functions,” Chakradhar revealed, highlighting the personal sacrifices behind the project.
“We worked without taking leave, fully committed to completing this engineering marvel,” he stated.
