Visakhapatnam: Visakhapatnam MP Matukumilli Sribharat on Friday said three major infrastructure projects worth Rs 1,500 crore have been approved for the city under the Urban Challenge Fund.

Speaking after the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) meeting at the collectorate, Sribharat said the Urban Challenge Fund, with a national outlay of Rs 50,000 crore, was designed to help cities address future urban requirements through sustainable planning and infrastructure development.

The projects approved for Visakhapatnam include an underground drainage system in the Madhurawada zone, a 24x7 drinking water supply network and strengthening of bulk and semi-bulk water supply systems across the city.

Sribharat said timely execution of sanctioned projects was as important as securing funding. He noted that several drinking water and infrastructure projects that had remained pending were being revived.

The MP also said a proposal worth another Rs 1,500 crore was being prepared for a citywide sewage management and wastewater treatment system. The project would include provisions for the reuse of treated water for industrial and other productive purposes.

The DISHA meeting reviewed the progress of projects related to coastal pollution mitigation, underground power distribution and various Centrally sponsored schemes.

Sribharat said the Centre and the State government were working in coordination to improve urban infrastructure and strengthen civic services in Visakhapatnam.
