VISAKHAPATNAM: Northern Andhra Pradesh joined the state-wide celebrations of three lakh housewarmings on Wednesday, marking a milestone in the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) housing initiative. Across the six districts of the region, 93,346 houses were completed under various PMAY schemes, bringing joy to thousands of families stepping into their new homes.

The atmosphere was festive yet uneven, with Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle showcasing remarkable progress, while Vizianagaram and Parvathipuram Manyam still have several houses under construction.

Visakhapatnam stood out with 38,691 houses completed, almost entirely under the PMAY Beneficiary-Led Construction (BLC) scheme, reflecting the district’s urban concentration. Anakapalle followed with 13,569 houses, including 9,870 under PMAY BLC and 3,699 under PMAY Gramin. In the tribal district of Alluri Sitharama Raju, 11,598 houses were completed — 6,563 under PMAY Gramin and 5,035 under PMAY Janmabhoomi.

Srikakulam added 12,877 houses, largely under the PMAY BLC category. Vizianagaram managed to complete 8,809 houses, with 2,121 still pending, while Parvathipuram Manyam recorded 6,563 completions, leaving 1,215 houses yet to be built.

In Vizianagaram, housewarming ceremonies were held constituency-wise. State Minister for MMSE and SERP Kondapalli Srinivas attended celebrations at Ambativalasa village in Bondapalli mandal. The minister expressed satisfaction that 8,793 families had moved into new homes in a single day, describing it as a historic achievement for the district.

He reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting beneficiaries and recalled that the late N.T. Rama Rao was the first leader to envision housing for the poor — a mission now being implemented nationwide under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.
