Visakhapatnam Among Safest Cities For Women: National Report
The nationwide index, released on Thursday by national women commission chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, was based on a survey of 12,770 women across 31 cities.
Visakhapatnam:Visakhapatnam is among the safest cities for women, according to the National Annual Report & Index on Women’s Safety (NARI) 2025.
The nationwide index, released on Thursday by national women commission chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar, was based on a survey of 12,770 women across 31 cities.
The survey placed the national safety score at 65 per cent, categorizing cities into five bands -- “much above,” “above,” “at,” “below,” and “much below” the benchmark.
Visakhapatnam was listed alongside Bhubaneswar, Aizawl, Gangtok, Itanagar, Kohima and Mumbai as cities performing “much above” the national score.
City police commissioner Shankha Brata Bagchi welcomed the recognition, stating that it reflected sustained efforts to improve women’s safety.
He claimed that the city police took several measures, including regular two-wheeler and four-wheeler patrols in vulnerable areas, surveillance through drones, installation of CCTV cameras across key locations and deployment of dedicated She teams.
The Commissioner also highlighted that women have 24/7 access to his office and personal contact number. “If any woman does not get justice at the police station level, she can approach me directly on mobile at any time or in person till midnight in the office,” he stated.
Delhi, Ranchi, Srinagar, Kolkata, Patna, Jaipur and Faridabad were ranked lowest, often linked to weaker institutional response or inadequate infrastructure.
Nationally, the survey found that six in ten women felt safe in their cities.
