VIJAYAWADA: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph C. Vijay received a rousing reception in Vijayawada on Tuesday, with enthusiastic fans lining the roads, cheering and raising “Thalapathy” slogans as he travelled through the city.
Vijay’s first visit to Andhra Pradesh after assuming office as Chief Minister turned Vijayawada into a hub of excitement. Fans gathered in large numbers at Gannavaram airport and along the route to the Sri Kanaka Durga temple atop Indrakeeladri.
Vijay arrived from Chennai on a special flight and was welcomed by municipal administration minister P. Narayana on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh government. The airport reverberated with cheers as fans gathered to catch a glimpse of their leader.
Moved by the enthusiastic reception, Vijay stepped out of his car to greet the waiting crowds before proceeding to the temple. Fans ran behind his convoy as it made its way towards Indrakeeladri. Elaborate security arrangements were made at the airport and along his route.
Vijay visited the Sri Kanaka Durga temple in the evening and offered special prayers to the presiding deity as part of the ongoing Dasara Sharannavaratri celebrations. On the third day of the festivities, the goddess was adorned as Annapurna Devi.
Temple priests and officials accorded the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister a traditional welcome with poornakumbham. Dressed in traditional attire, Vijay greeted devotees waiting in the queue lines with folded hands before entering the sanctum sanctorum for darshan and special rituals.
After the darshan, Vedic scholars blessed him at the Aniveti Mandapam. Vijay also drew attention for his simplicity when he moved aside a peeta (low stool) arranged for him and sat directly on the floor to receive the Vedic blessings.
AP endowments secretary Kannababu, endowments commissioner Ramachandra Mohan, temple trust board chairman Borra Radhakrishna (Gandhi) and executive officer Seena Naik jointly presented Vijay with the goddess’s sacred garments, prasadam and a portrait of the deity.
Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath (Chinni), Nellore MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, members of the temple’s board of trustees, temple officials, Minister Narayana and senior city police officers participated in the programme. The visit took place amid the grand Dasara Sharannavaratri festivities at the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamy Varla Devasthanam.
