Vijayawada: Ahead of New Year celebrations, the NTR district police intensified their road safety campaign by organising a 2-km walkathon in Vijayawada on Tuesday, urging motorists to strictly avoid drunken driving and overspeeding.

The rally, organised by the Vijayawada traffic police in association with Companionship members, was flagged off by city police commissioner S.V. Rajasekhar Babu from the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium to Benz Circle. Participants carried placards bearing the slogan “No alcohol, no speed - life is precious”, highlighting the dangers of reckless driving during the festive season.

Addressing the gathering, the CP said the police were bidding farewell to 2025 and stepping into 2026 with a renewed focus on road safety. He noted a significant decline in road accident fatalities, from 454 deaths in 2024 to 366 in 2025, saving nearly 88 lives.

He attributed the improvement largely to awareness campaigns, particularly on helmet use, with 70-80 per cent of two-wheeler riders now wearing helmets. Stressing that enforcement alone was insufficient, he urged citizens to treat road safety as a collective movement.
