ANANTAPUR: In a landmark event for higher education in India, Union Education minister Dharmendra Pradhan dedicated the first phase of the Central University of Andhra Pradesh (CUAP) to the nation through a virtual ceremony on Tuesday.

This significant milestone marks the completion of the initial infrastructure and academic facilities, paving the way for the university to begin its journey of fostering knowledge, research and innovation.

Following the dedication, CUAP vice-chancellor Prof. S. A. Kori declared: "This achievement is a testament to the collective hard work, dedication and vision of everyone involved – from the government and funding agencies to our faculty, staff, and construction teams. We are excited to open our doors and embark on our mission to provide world-class education and contribute significantly to the intellectual and social development of our nation."

University registrar Prof. C. Sheela Reddy said completion of the first phase signifies not just the opening of buildings, but a pathway to learning and discovery.

The CUAP started four undergraduate (UG) and two post-graduate (PG) programmes in 2018. Now in 2025–26, it is offering nine UG, 17 PG, six Ph. D, and 15 diploma programmes, attracting students from 23 states across the country.

This marks a significant transformation from its beginnings, when fewer than 100 students from seven states enrolled into the university. CUAP now has nearly 1,600 students from all parts of the country, including faculty.

The central university is located at Janthaluru village in B.K. Samudram mandal, about 15 km from Anantapur.

Government of India sanctioned ₹711 crore to make CUAP a reality. Vice chancellor Prof Kori, formerly head of Karnataka Higher Education, initiated the efforts to bring the university to the present shape.
