Vijayawada: A delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), along with commissioners from municipal corporations and municipalities across Andhra Pradesh, visited Guntur on Tuesday to study the city's sanitation, public health and renewable energy initiatives.

Guntur municipal commissioner K. Mayur Ashok briefed the team on projects implemented with UNIDO support, including the use of e-autos for waste collection and the development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. The delegation inspected door-to-door waste collection operations in IPD Colony, where waste is segregated at source, and reviewed awareness programmes promoting better sanitation practices.

The team also interacted with rag pickers, benefiting from vehicles provided through the National Safai Karamcharis Finance and Development Corporation. Later, officials visited the floating solar power plant at the Sangam Jagarlamudi Summer Storage Tank, which generates clean energy while reducing water evaporation.

Surabhi Malik, director in the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, praised Guntur’s sanitation and eco-friendly initiatives and said its best practices could be replicated in other cities through future collaboration between the Centre and UNIDO.
