Tirupati: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has proposed spiritually meaningful names for streets, circles and important locations atop Tirumala, choosing them from Vaishnava Puranas and traditions linked to the temple’s presiding deity Lord Venkateswara.

The proposal is aimed at aligning names of places with the religious character of the hill shrine.
At present, many roads and junctions at Tirumala do not have official names. They are commonly identified by nearby landmarks, such as Mullagunta car parking, GNC Road, MBC Road, RBGH Circle, ATC Circle, Medaramitta and Putakoolla Mitta.
Explaining the idea behind the proposal, TTD board chairman B.R. Naidu underlined that Tirumala should be seen not merely as a hill town, but as a sacred Vaishnava Kshetra. He said surroundings around the abode of Lord Venkateswara must reflect the spiritual and cultural heritage of the temple. Naming streets and locations after Vaishnava traditions, he felt, would help maintain that sanctity, while also serving the practical needs of pilgrims, 70,000–90,000 of whom visit Tirumala every day.
In a note placed before the TTD Trust Board, the Engineering department said the proposed names could be drawn from Vaishnava Puranas, traditions related to Lord Vishnu, the Alwars, Annamacharya’s sankirtanas, and the kings, queens and puja systems associated with the history of the temple. The proposal said such names would strengthen the spiritual feel of Tirumala as Kaliyuga Vaikuntam. It will bring synergy in locations and the abode of Lord Venkateswara.
The TTD chairman said the initiative would move Tirumala away from the existing landmark-based system to a more organised and uniform naming structure. He said proper naming of streets and locations would reduce confusion, improve orientation across the hill town, and be useful to pilgrims, temple staff and emergency services, particularly during festivals and peak days.
To take the proposal forward, the TTD board has approved the formation of a three-member committee to suggest suitable names. The committee comprises Prof. Chakravarthy Ranganathan, director, Centre for Distance and Online Education at the National Sanskrit University, Dr. Medasani Mohan, special officer of the TTD’s Annamacharya Project, and Dr. Dhulipala Prabhakara Krishna Murthy, special officer of the Purana Ithihasa Project at TTD.
These members, who are scholars in Sanskrit, Telugu literature and Puranic studies, are expected to recommend names that are scripturally appropriate and in line with the spiritual nature of Tirumala. Once implemented, the new system is expected to replace informal landmark references with officially notified names, helping pilgrims and services navigate the hill with more appropriate recall.
