TTD Plans Road Repair Works Ahead of Monsoon
The TTD Works Committee has reviewed the proposals and recommended expediting the process. Tenders will be invited shortly, with work scheduled to begin before the onset of the southwest monsoon.
Tirupati: The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is planning to launch a project to repair and upgrade the twin ghat roads linking Tirupati and Tirumala, earmarking Rs 10.75 crore for the initiative. The decision comes in response to worsening road conditions due to increased vehicular traffic and damage from past rains.
The two ghat roads, which together handle close to 10,000 vehicles daily—including APSRTC buses, private cars, lorries, and tippers—have suffered significant surface damage due to the heavy load and continuous exposure to rain. The wear and tear have raised both inconvenience and safety concerns, prompting urgent intervention.
The second ghat road, used for uphill traffic towards Tirumala, spans 17 km, while the first ghat road, designated for downhill traffic, measures 18 km. The last major resurfacing was undertaken in January 2021 using Bituminous Renewal Coating. However, the post-Covid surge in pilgrim traffic, combined with the heavy rains of late 2021 and ongoing infrastructure works such as drainage and crash barrier installation, has led to substantial deterioration. Potholes and surface cracks are now widespread along several stretches.
In response, TTD plans to adopt more durable materials and modern techniques for the upcoming repairs. “We are using bituminous macadam as the base layer, which provides structural strength and distributes heavy loads efficiently”, said a senior engineering official. “This will be followed by a top layer of bituminous concrete, which offers a smooth, water-resistant surface capable of withstanding traffic stress”.
To enhance visibility and safety, especially during night-time and adverse weather, TTD will implement thermoplastic road marking. “The compound is applied hot and incorporates reflective glass beads, making it highly durable and ideal for the ghat terrain”, the official explained. Raised pavement markers (road studs) will also be installed at regular intervals, particularly near curves, to aid lane guidance. Improved signage warning of gradients, sharp curves, and speed limits will be installed along the route.
The TTD Works Committee has reviewed the proposals and recommended expediting the process. Tenders will be invited shortly, with work scheduled to begin before the onset of the southwest monsoon. Officials stated that repair activities will be timed to avoid peak hours, with steps taken to minimize disruption to pilgrim traffic. The upgraded road surfaces are expected to enhance the travel experience for lakhs of devotees visiting the Tirumala temple annually.
