Senior IAS officer Anil Kumar Singhal, who earlier served as the executive officer (EO) of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) between 2017 and 2020, has been reappointed to the post by the Andhra Pradesh government.
A government order (GO) issued on Monday placed his services at the disposal of the revenue (endowments) department for the assignment. The present EO, J. Syamala Rao, a 1997-batch officer, has been shifted and posted as principal secretary to government (Political) in the general administration department.
Singhal, a 1993-batch officer, had first taken charge of the TTD administration on May 1, 2017, after serving as the resident commissioner at Andhra Pradesh Bhavan in New Delhi. He was initially given a two-year term but was allowed to continue by the succeeding YSRC government until October 2020.
During his earlier stint, Singhal introduced several administrative reforms. To promote transparency, swiping machines were installed at accommodation and darshan counters to enable cashless transactions. He also replaced chemical cleaning products with eco-friendly sanitation materials across Tirumala. His period saw the discontinuation of subsidies that had placed financial strain on the temple, including those on the famed Srivari laddu.
Another significant measure was the introduction of the SRIVANI Trust-linked protocol darshan system, which has been contributing `400–500 crore annually to the trust. He also cleared the long-pending backlog of coins in the Parakamani and treasury, estimated at `10–12 crore in small denominations.
However, his administration was also marked by controversies. His appointment in 2017, as the first IAS officer from North India to lead the TTD, sparked initial protests. His tenure saw allegations over the missing jewels of Lord Venkateswara and the removal of chief priest A.V. Ramana Deekshitulu.
