Tribal Workers Rescued From Bonded Labour
Forty-one tribal workers, including women and children, were rescued from five worksites in Sri Sathya Sai district following allegations of bonded labour and abuse.
Forty-one tribal workers, including women and children, from Maharashtra’s Raigarh district were rescued from five worksites in Sri Sathya Sai district on Thursday in an inter-state operation following allegations of bonded labour and abuse.
Belonging to the vulnerable Kathlati tribal community, the workers were allegedly forced to work for over three years. The case came to light after two young men escaped from the worksites and reached Maharashtra. They approached social workers seeking help to rescue their parents and grandparents and later lodged a complaint with authorities.
Acting on the complaint, Sri Sathya Sai district officials coordinated with Maharashtra authorities and identified five worksites where the workers were allegedly held in bonded labour. The sites were located at two places in Chinthalapalli, Puleru Road near Gorantla, Thummarayuni Thanda and Talamarla. Four sites are in Gorantla mandal and one in Kothacheruvu mandal.
The rescued workers underwent medical examinations and were taken to the MRO office for enquiry. During questioning, they alleged physical abuse, long working hours and non-payment of wages. They said advances of ₹20,000–₹50,000 had been given to them, after which they were allegedly prevented from leaving. Some were reportedly denied medical care.
A nine-month-pregnant woman was among those rescued. Two persons linked to the worksites were taken into custody. Police have traced the owners and further action will follow.
