Vijayawada: In an initiative aimed at redefining tourism in Andhra Pradesh, the government has announced the AP Tourism-Rapido Driver-cum-Guide Programme, the first of its kind in the country.

The partnership aims to integrate tourist-friendly features into Rapido’s platform. There would be dedicated tourist autos and cabs, curated circuits and guided experiences based on a framework developed by the tourism department.

The programme was formalized with the signing of a pact during the CII Partnership Summit earlier this month, attended by chief minister Chandrababu Naidu, tourism minister Kandula Durgesh and Rapido co-founder Pavan Guntupalli.

As per the plan, government-certified driver-cum-guides would be given training on AP’s culture, heritage, fables, hospitality and safety. This would hopefully transform them into trusted and professional companions for tourists.

Tourism minister, Kandula Durgesh, said the training sessions would begin next month. Initially, the programme would roll out in the cities of Vijayawada, Tirupati and Visakhapatnam.

Help desks are to be established at airports, major railway stations and bus bays. These desks would assist visitors and facilitate on-the-spot bookings, making travel more seamless and accessible.

The minister said the initiative underscored AP’s commitment to a technology-first public-private partnership (PPP) approach to development. It would showcase how innovative state-designed concepts can be effectively implemented alongside leading companies like Rapido to maximize the impact.

The official launch of the initiative is expected soon. “This marks a significant milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s journey toward modern, smart and inclusive tourism that benefits visitors and promotes sustainable growth across the state,” the minister said.
