Tirupati District Proposed To Get Police Commissionerate
The new arrangement would also change the police hierarchy, with the present SP, Additional SP and DSP posts replaced by Commissioner, DCP and ACP designations.
Tirupati: The state government has proposed a Police Commissionerate for Tirupati district, replacing the existing Superintendent of Police-led system with a zonal policing structure to meet the growing requirements of Tirupati and other rapidly developing parts of the district.
The proposed system, to be headed by an IG- or DIG-rank officer as Commissioner, comes four years after the separate Tirupati Urban Police District was abolished following the formation of Tirupati district in April 2022.
Tirupati had a separate Urban Police District from 2010, which became fully operational in 2016. The arrangement was discontinued in 2022, when the regular district police system was introduced after the reorganisation of districts.
The proposed commissionerate will cover Tirumala, Tirupati, Srikalahasti and Sri City, each with different policing requirements. Tirumala receives large numbers of pilgrims, Srikalahasti has developed as a religious, industrial and educational centre, while Sri City has emerged as a major industrial hub.
The district police have been handling an increasing number of cases. Tirupati recorded 9,411 FIRs in 2024 and 10,094 in 2025, while another 5,123 cases have been registered so far this year. Cybercrime, crimes against women, traffic congestion and road accidents have added to the workload.
Under the proposed structure, the district will be divided into four zones, with a DCP heading each zone. Tirumala will have one subdivision and three police stations. Tirupati will have two subdivisions and 11 stations, while Srikalahasti will have two subdivisions and 14 stations. The Sri City zone will also have two subdivisions covering 21 police stations.
The proposal also includes a separate coordination wing headed by an SP-rank officer functioning as DCP. The wing will coordinate specialised units, including the Tirupati and Tirumala Central Crime Stations, Traffic Police, Women Police Station, City Armed Reserve, Control Room, Crime and Traffic Record Bureaus, IT Core, Command Control Centre, Clues Team and Fingerprint Bureau.

The Commissioner would have executive magistrate powers in law and order matters, enabling the police administration to exercise certain preventive and regulatory powers directly under the law.
