Tirupati:Water availability in Tirumala has improved slightly, with existing reserves now estimated to meet the hill town’s daily requirements for 100 days, compared with 90 days a fortnight ago. Fresh inflows into the five major reservoirs have increased storage by a net 40.08 lakh gallons after accounting for consumption, according to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).

The improvement comes amid concerns over water scarcity due to inadequate rainfall and sustained demand from pilgrims. The TTD had imposed restrictions on water use by hotels, commercial establishments, private religious institutions and choultries to conserve supplies and prioritise pilgrims’ needs.

The five reservoirs — Papavinasanam, Gogarbham, Akasaganga, Kumaradhara and Pasupudhara — recorded a gross storage increase of 61.68 lakh gallons as of Friday morning. Of this, 21.60 lakh gallons were consumed, leaving a net increase of 40.08 lakh gallons.

Kumaradhara recorded the highest increase at 25.14 lakh gallons, followed by Papavinasanam at 20.96 lakh gallons, Gogarbham at 9.25 lakh gallons and Akasaganga at 6.33 lakh gallons. Pasupudhara recorded no change in storage.

As of Friday morning, Papavinasanam held 2,688.35 lakh gallons, Gogarbham 508.31 lakh gallons, Kumaradhara 363.98 lakh gallons, Akasaganga 30.40 lakh gallons and Pasupudhara 24.38 lakh gallons.

The reservoirs received a cumulative additional inflow of 244.46 lakh gallons between September 15 and October 23. Of this, 7.02 lakh gallons entered during the Salakatla Brahmotsavams and 148.48 lakh gallons during the Navaratri Brahmotsavams.

The Akasaganga dam area recorded 8 mm of rainfall over the past two days. Tirumala consumes nearly 60 lakh gallons of water a day, with supplies drawn from its reservoirs and other sources, including Kalyani Dam.
